Production for The Royal Opera (Linbury) 2004

Directed, designed & lit by John Lloyd Davies

The Royal Opera's new production of The Rape of Lucretia is quite simply a triumph. It's hard to imagine it being bettered. A thousand stars shimmer in the night sky of the cruciform set designed and lit by John Lloyd Davies, who also directs with a fluency that ensures that the interest never flags.

- The Observer

John Lloyd Davies' startling new production . . .  a rewarding, deeply disturbing experience.

- The Guardian

One of those charmed evenings when performers' artistry and composer's vision achieve almost nuclear fission. Unforgettable.

- Sunday Telegraph

John Lloyd Davies's production did Britten's music proud.

- The Times

As produced, designed and lit by John Lloyd Davies, The Rape of Lucretia looked better than anybody might have hoped. As producer, he draws a compelling performance from his young cast.

- Financial Times

JLD's design, which brings Roman statuary on stage with books hanging mysteriously from the ceiling, uses the space inventively and to grand purpose.

- The Stage

On the present showing, this should be the first of many successful productions.

- What's On

The Rape of Lucretia deserves to be a sell-out.
